How to Reset a Skoda Key
Just received a notification from my infotainment system to say that the battery in the key is low and must be replaced. This isn't the first time and last time I visited an auto dealer, they replaced it for free, took 2 minutes and said it would work again.
Switch ignition ON and secure the vehicle mechanically. Press the unlock button on the remote control 5 times in 1 second intervals. A short horn tone will play.
EEPROM Method
It can take some time for a professional car locksmith to reprogram your keys if it ceases to function. In many instances, this requires taking a look at the EEPROM to find the unique code for the particular vehicle. This process is risky and there's a good possibility of destroying the data within the module. This is why it's best to leave the work to an skilled locksmith.
An EEPROM (non-volatile) memory is used in a wide variety of electronic devices, including car keys. It stores data, which includes the unique security codes or encryption keys that are recognized by your car when you use the key to lock or start it. These codes are important because they let the car know that you have the correct key and that you are authorized to drive it.
If your EEPROM is damaged, the keys will stop working. The issue is usually caused by using the wrong key, or by accidentally hitting one of the buttons. A signal is sent to the vehicle and then to the key, which has to respond within a certain time. If the key does not respond, the car cannot be unlocked. It will start to ring alarms.
The car can also detect that the key is nearby with a sensor located in the door handle. It works by sending an indication to the key's internal coil, which in turn, responds by sending the signal to the sensor. If the sensor detects this, the car is able to unlock itself and turns on the interior lights if set to do this.
Even older keyless entry systems come with an older-fashioned backup. If the remote isn't working, you can still manually open the driver door. This can be done by sliding the blade away or, in certain models, by pressing a button on the pocket. This method is especially useful in the event that you've lost your key or the battery has died.
Remote Control Method
If you've recently purchased a remote control and it doesn't work in your car the seller may not have programmed it to work with your vehicle. It is possible that the battery terminals are loose. They will appear loose and may be soldered in. Soldering them back into place will bring back your key fob's full function. If you're not confident with this type of repair, seek out an expert auto electrician.
Switch off the ignition and then lock the vehicle from the inside using the second key that's not compatible (this will reset memory position 1).
